Future of Breeding Parrots and Macaws in Trinidad and Tobago
Aug. 22, 2018
As Aviculturist for the past forty years, Albert Pantin breeds three species of Macaws, the Blue & Gold Macaw, the Scarlet Macaw and the Hans Macaw which is the smallest Macaw in the world; Twelve spices of Parrots, the Orange Winged Parrot, the Yellow Front Parrot, the Red Lored Parrot, the Yellow Naped Parrot, the Blue Front Parrot, the Yellow Shoulder Parrot, the Blue Head Parrot, the Eclectus Parrot, the African Grey Parrot, the Dusky Parrot, the Black Headed Caique and the Galah Cockatoo. For twenty years Albert Pantin has been a member of the WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMITTEE OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO representing The Cage Bird Fanciers of T&T and his intention was at some point in time to re-introduce the Blue & Gold Macaw back into the wild. In 1993 the Cincinnati Zoo embarked on a mission to assist the Wildlife Division in Trinidad & Tobago in restoring the Blue & Gold Macaw in the wild. In 1995 the proposal was agreed to and approved and arrangements were made with the Wildlife Division for the release. The birds were finally released in 2003. According to Pantin “I am happy to play a small part in keeping alive a species that is already extinct throughout most of the Caribbean islands.” Albert is the owner of Pantin’s Pet Supplies, located in Picton St., Newtown and has been a Rotarian for over thirty five years.
